For over 100 years our client has proven themselves in their industry.  They are in search for a Material Manager at their plant near Rochester, Minnesota area.  This individual has responsibility for procurement and supporting plant schedules, inventory control, cost containment, and planning.  Develops sources to minimize plant costs and reduce plant cycle times.  Serves as a liaison between the Company's Suppliers and internal operations to optimize the utilization of raw materials. Provides for and maintains the integrity of the plant's purchasing system.

Reporting to the Plant Manager, this role is responsible for supporting the lean initiatives. 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: 

 

    Works with the Safety Coordinator to identify primary causal relationships between plant recordable accident rates and manufacturing processes and methods. Develops priority schedules and applies tools to define potential hazards. Implements corrective measures to eliminate / minimize risk. Provides for the application and completion of maintenance work orders to address potential safety issues as priority measures. Provides for the training and development of all maintenance departmental Supervisors and Technicians as it relates to the application of safe work methods and the handling and utilization of potentially hazardous materials.
    Supports the planning and execution of the plants scheduling and production systems.  Perpetually evaluates plant raw materials and purchased component inventories against planned production requirements and develops / executes procurement activities accordingly.

    Supervises 1 Exempt Supervisor and indirectly manage 9 hourly employees.
        Provides for the perpetual accuracy of the plant's inventories (raw materials and work in process).  Provides clear feedback as to daily performance, defines problem areas, and expedites corrective measures to resolve known issues on a daily basis.

    Provides for the development, implementation, perpetual compliance, and audit of standard work for all processes.  Develops and utilizes glass house metrics on the shop floor to focus work groups on key operational metrics.  Provides for the effective use of accountability metrics and meetings to evaluate performance on a perpetual basis and to identify performance gaps and waste opportunities requiring resolution. Consistently challenges current state standards and performance levels through the use of projects to eliminate waste, enhance performance, and sets new operating standards as a result.
    conjunction with the Plant Manager and Quality Assurance Manager to develop strategic efforts to optimize plant scrap performance, to develop standard work to define best practices, and to audit compliance to sustain gains. Ensures that all material purchased meets minimum product QC standards.  Perpetually reviews opportunities to improve total cost of all plant procurement and implements measures to optimize plant purchased price variances to defined objectives. 

    Provides for the optimization of plant raw materials inventories.  Works in conjunction with the Plant Manager and Production Supervisors to develop and execute strategic measures to minimize inventory carried without impact to the execution of complete and on time shipments.

 

    Perpetually investigates opportunities to provide for the procurement and utilization of materials, containers, transportation and disposal methods that enhance the plant's environmental performance.
    Provides procurement support for new product introductions.  Works in conjunction with all departments to provide for the timely development and release of new products.

    Works with the Plant Manager to develop departmental budgets.  Benchmarks "best of the best" performance indicators and develops / implements strategic measures to meet or exceed those expectations.  Monitors budget compliance with departmental Staff on a daily basis.  Identifies cause and effect relationships and implements corrective measures to assure daily and periodic compliance to budgetary goals. Provides for the continuous development of all departmental associates.  Develops and applies skills training programs.  Applies cross training mechanisms and certifications to enhance the skill sets of employees and enhance staffing flexibility.

    Diversify and expand current supplier base within each product line.
    Develop and maintain outside sourcing strategies to optimize lumber utilization into and throughout the plant.

    Optimizes total costs related to plant materials.  Works in conjunction with the Plant Manager and Fiber Manager to develop strategic efforts to optimize plant lumber fall down performance, to develop standard work to define best practices, and to audit compliance to sustain gains from sourcing. Ensures that all materials purchased meets minimum product QC standards. 
    Management of any outside sourcing locations and/or facilities and development and maintenance of expanding into selling and delivering any lumber products not utilized by plant.
    Develop brokerage network via vendor direct sourcing opportunities.

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: 

    Bachelor Degree or equivalent
    Post-Secondary education in Wood Science/ Forest Products Utilization preferred
    Lumber grading certificate preferred.
    5+ year's progressive experience in a lumber procurement, grading, and materials handling role.
    Previous experience/strong understanding of cost of quality management with a basic understanding of procurement management in a wood manufacturing environment. 
    Previous experience/strong understanding of inventory management tools like PPV, RFQ, and inventory turns.
    Previous experience in Lumber Buying with strong negotiation skills.
    Basic knowledge and understanding of wood laminate processing preferred.
    Fundamental understanding of supplier quality and scorecard programs.
    Previous experience/best practices implementing and using continuous improvement/lean tools such as; 5-S, Lean Manufacturing, Transactional Lean, etc. to drive improvement.
    Demonstrated strong leadership, team building and advanced coaching skills.
    Demonstrated ability to motivate people, assess and develop employee skills.
    A strong ability to be adaptable and flexible.
    Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
    Availability to travel overnight regularly.
    Demonstrated understanding of the principles and applications associated with a Wood Laminate manufacturing operation.
