Cattle Buyer

eports To: VP Cattle Procurement


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Purchasing Fat cattle, White fat cows and Fed Holstein cattle for slaughter.
  • Executing contracts, grids, live, and dressed formulas.
  • Determining an estimated quality and yield grade through visual inspection of live cattle.
  • Self management skills (time, location, routing).
  • Scheduling and coordinating cattle for harvest.
  • Maintain accurate records of purchases and delivery schedules.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in annual budget planning.
  • Ability to represent our client at producer meetings and give presentations.
  • Define Internal and External interfaces.
  • Strong ability to Interact and coordinate with other team members.
  • Training other team members as necessary.


Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Prior experience in the cattle procurement and/or feed yard setting preferred.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Cattle livestock experience required.
  • Excellent math skills.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Must be 18 years of age and authorized to work in the United States.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule.
  • Excellent negotiation skills.
  • Valid driver's license and insurance (if driving own vehicle).
  • Time Management skills.



  • High School degree required.
  • BS Degree in Animal Science or Agricultural preferred.


Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit, stand, talk, walk, bend and travel for long periods of time.


Work Environment:

  • Office time will vary / Field time will vary.
  • Will be assigned a specific regional location to procure cattle.



  • Except for qualification established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of job.


Conditions of Employment:

  • Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug test if one is offered to be eligible for employment.
  • Must be bondable and pass a background check.
