Job Description:


A manufacturing client who is a leader in motorized consumer tools with facilities across the country as well as an international presence.   Currently seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to join our Charlotte, North Carolina team.   The Automation Engineer will support factory operations utilizing various design, engineering and management skills to capture automation opportunities at any of the Consumer Brands Divisions factories.  Must be an innovative self-starter who is flexible and adaptive, has a strong interest in process improvement and is a proven leader in both project and non-project settings.
Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Engineering or Engineering Technology, preferably in the area of mechanical or electrical engineering with an Automation focus: robotics, automation, controls engineering recommended.
  • Minimum five years' of experience in engineering with emphasis in machine design and facility construction/maintenance.

  Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Set-up, programming and start-up of both hardware and software based PLCs of multiple brands and models.
  • HMIs setup, programming and start-up of multiple brands and models
  • DC drives and AC Variable Frequency Drives of multiple brands and models
  • Servos of multiple brands and models
  • Demonstrated project management skills and knowledge of project management tools, with the ability to track project KPIs such as timing, cost, performance (savings), quality, risk, etc.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of machine design, thermodynamics, fluids systems design (including pneumatics and hydraulics), and PLC controls.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Ability to create and revise AutoCAD/CATIA models and drawings.
  • Ability to create and maintain accurate bills of materials for new equipment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Project.
  • Ability to analyze/design systems, then estimate savings, costs, and throughputs given experience with fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a leader both in project and non-project settings.
  • Working knowledge of various communications platforms: EthernetIP, Canbus, ModbusPCP, DeviceNet
  • Working knowledge of machine vision systems preferred: Cognex, Keyence, Banner
  • Working knowledge of Visual Basic, C, C++and RISC languages: (ABB Rapid, Fanuc Coral)
  • Ability to communicate with on all levels of company (from production floor to executives)
  • Professional Engineering license and PMP are a plus.
  • Supervise maintenance and outside contractors. Hydraulics and pneumatics of multiple brands and models.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing large, complex automated systems
  • Demonstrated experience with networking and connected manufacturing systems
  • General mechanical, electrical and electronics expertise
  • Self-starter, flexible, adaptive and innovative.  Think out of the box.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify key opportunities in reducing operating costs through automation, insourcing, equipment efficiency, automated-guided-vehicles, etc.
  • Manage various automation/equipment projects as required. Includes, but not limited to preparation of project descriptions and specifications, collection and review of quotations, selection of contractors/vendors, and coordination of contractor/vendor activities.
  • Improve reliability and performance of production equipment and implement resultant changes
  • Support LEAN events as a team member and as a resource for other teams.
  • Support objectives of Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost, and People.
  • Support Purchasing team with negotiation and procurement of materials, equipment parts and services.
  • Prepare requests for project funding. Includes preparation of Investment Requests, grant requests, etc.
  • Implement changes in equipment or provide new equipment on short notice.
  • Perform other tasks as required.
