Our client, a renowned dairy industry manufacture of delicious cheese, ice cream and yogurt products has an exciting new opportunity for an Associate Packaging Developer to join their growing organization!

As part of Packaging R&D, the Packaging Developer role will create a strong and productive partnership with Product Development, Category Management, and Operations. This role will also actively partner with external suppliers, industrial design firms, patent attorneys, our internal and external manufacturing plants to identify, design, test, and integrate new packaging ideas, components and materials. The Packaging Developer will work across New Product Development categories including cheese, yogurt and ice cream. This role will actively participate in different project types including Innovation, Quality Improvement and Cost Savings.

What must the ideal Packaging Developer candidate possess?

  • Consumer Package Goods (CPG) industry experience.  Doesn't have to be food industry related.
  • Packaging development experience
  • Flexibles, plastics, corrugated industry experience
  • Demonstrated MS Project experience
  • Attention to detail, collaborative, team oriented, thrives in a fast pace environment

 What will this person be doing on a daily basis:

  • Utilization of Stage Gate Project Management process and provide packaging development detail in packaging programs from concept initiation through commercialization. Assist in developing timelines, risk assessment and contingency plans to ensure execution on projects on time and schedule.          
  • Develop understanding of packaging technologies within manufacturing network, the packaging industry and ensure strategies incorporate that knowledge to optimize effectiveness, cost, and food safety.          
  • Provide support at plant trials for packaging materials, working with cross-functional teams (Marketing, Operations, Product Development, Supply Chain and Quality). Properly plan, coordinate and report each trial, provide appropriate level of technical support and troubleshooting to execute trial objectives and ensure proper documentation of each activity.          
  • Ability to work with outside design firms and establish clear requirements.  Capability in SolidWorks 3D modeling or similar.          
  • Design, plan and conduct, line trials and package performance testing.          
  • Ensure all Packaging Quality expectations are delivered.          
  • Leverage and challenge suppliers to develop innovative package formats to achieve business goals.          
  • Ability to generate, develop and execute packaging ideas by leveraging both existing equipment in the company and partnering with engineering on new equipment.          
  • Troubleshoot issues that arise from package development, line trials and commercialization process.          
  • Build strong working relationships with internal and external partners.          
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; able to effectively communicate to all levels within the organization.

  • Packaging Materials: apply technical material knowledge to projects; provide technical-based solutions.          
  • Packaging Evaluation: apply knowledge of test methodologies for packaging materials specification development. Be able to recommend additional critical parameters as well as be able to outline procedures and work with quality teams.          
  • Graphics: apply knowledge around the printing process to determine how it affects package
  • Product Packaging interactions: apply knowledge of product, process, and package interactions along with modes of failure to make material recommendations and narrow down variables during development process to ensure effective and safe products.
  • Develop Packaging Specifications for new and/or existing products
