Position Overview:

The Packaging Engineer, R&D will be joining a private equity “start-up” business with iconic brands, strong retail presence, and outstanding manufacturing capabilities.  With minimal supervision, the Packaging Engineer will organize, plan, manage and execute packaging innovation, development and cost reduction for HTFC. The Packaging Engineer will investigate and recommend materials, processes, innovation, packaging and equipment to ensure the successful commercialization of assigned projects. The individual in this role will also support Supply Chain and Operations in the procurement and manufacturing of packages/packaging that meet consumer expectations for function, cost, quality and shelf life. Client plans to aggressively increase the pace of innovation in the baking, ingredients, and breakfast categories where there is ample opportunity for disruption and differentiation. The role will be based in the Greater Toledo, Ohio manufacturing facility where a fully operational pilot plant is located. 

 

Responsibilities:

Support the packaging needs of assigned business/product lines.

Provide technical input throughout all phases of New Product Development and lead packaging development projects from concept through commercialization.

Manage multiple packaging development and cost reduction projects.

Lead in the identification and resolution of problems and facilitate new or improved packaging, new or improved processes and cost savings.

Coordinate and execute experiments and plant trials, prepare results in technical reports (written and/or oral) with minimal supervision.

Work as a cross functional resource to provide new packing platforms and support innovation.

Provide technical support to Operations for solving manufacturing issues.

Work with Marketing and partner with Operations for commercial execution against all new products.

Seek, evaluate, and utilize technical information to achieve objectives.

Recommend and implement product quality improvements based on quantitative insights.

Leverage external vendors and work directly with Supply Chain.

Maintain laboratory ingredient inventories. Keep accurate records on lab work and data analysis.

Safely operate, clean, and maintain lab-ware and equipment while adhering to GMPs in the handling and preparation of food products.

Will need to travel as requested, less than 20%.

 

Qualifications:

Preferred:  Master’s Degree in Engineering, Food Science or Engineering or Business.

Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Packaging Engineering, Food Science or Engineering.

Required: 4 years Food packaging experience.  Experience in baking categories and CPGs strongly preferred:

Understanding of product and packaging interactions, food protection and packaging tests

Understanding of packaging equipment, packaging processes

Understanding of carbohydrate chemistry and fat/oil chemistry

Ability to work with Supply Chain on capital projects involving packaging solutions

Ability to manage multiple projects

Ability to work in food allergen areas (peanuts, tree nuts, egg, dairy, soy, wheat)
