SUMMARY

The Molding Process Technician is responsible for the complete set-up, change over, adjustment, and troubleshooting of mold tooling in plant injection molding machines, as well as related auxiliary equipment. This position is responsible for debugging new mold tools, establishing molding process parameters, and reviewing existing jobs for process improvements, as well as acts as a resource to other departmental personnel in troubleshooting problem molding jobs.  In addition, will assist with automation, developing robotic path motions, testing procedures, and documenting results. 

 

DUTIES

Following process sheets and engineering drawings, breaks down, changes over, and sets up mold tools in injection molding machines, using power tools, hand tools and gages.  Attaches connecting air, oil, and water lines. Adjusts controls to regulate pressure, temperature, speed, and feed rates, and to set cycle times.  Sets up auxiliary equipment as required.

Using precision measuring equipment, optical comparators, and microscopes, completes first line quality checks for first piece party submission, conferring with QA on quality of parts.

Documents set up and run parameters for the molding press.

Adjusts machine controls to regulate specified machine forming pressure and plastic curing time in mold as necessary to maintain acceptable piece part quality levels and correct out of control characteristics.

Troubleshoots tools in mold machines.  Determines, in cooperation with tool room, when a tool needs to be pulled for repair.  Also troubleshoots problems with auxiliary equipment.

Works with QA, tool room, and engineering personnel in root cause analysis of problem jobs and act as a resource in identifying and solving molding problems.

Assists in reviewing existing jobs and molding processes for continuous improvement with a focus on improving product quality, machine utilization, productivity efficiencies, and reducing set up times and scrap.

Coordinates debugging of new mold tools.  Using knowledge of molding conditions and machine function, sets up and documents molding parameters to be used. Completes sampling process, creates and records process sheets, and ensures parts meet required specifications prior to submittal to QA for PPAP completion.

In coordination with quality assurance and engineering, conducts Design of Experiments (DOEs) on various molding processes.

Where automation is utilized, assists in developing robotic path motions to maximize efficiency, safety, and quality.

Assists in testing robotics procedures and documents results. 

Maintains inventories of production molding supplies used and submits requisitions for molding supplies and repair parts as needed. 

Willingness to assist in training and development of molding set up technicians to enhance technical competency as required.

Keeps press clean and performs maintenance on molding equipment as needed in coodination with maintenance department. 

Moves raw material to the machine and performs other material handling activities as necessary utilizing handcarts and forklift.

Handles and disposes scrap, runners, and purging material.

As needed, operates molding presses to produce piece parts to work order requirements.

 

EDUCATION/REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma required.  Technical college or college training/degree in related plastics manufacturing or engineering program preferred. 

Prior experience setting up and troubleshooting plastic injection molding machines in a precision production molding environment required (3+ years desired).

Previous experience with insert micro injection molding applications and automation/robotics a plus. Experience with Arburg, Toyo and Engel machinery preferred.

Extensive experience setting up and adjusting processing parameters of 17-88 ton injection molding machines for small parts with very close tolerances

Highly organized with a strong understanding of safety in this type of manufacturing setting.

Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and work independently as well as within a team environment

Experience with medical and automotive parts.

Must be able to read precision measuring instruments and blueprints (2D and 3D CAD prints).

Strong mechanical aptitude, problem solving skills, and ability to visualize spatially in three dimensions.

Must be willing to develop a working knowledge of ISO/TS procedures and Statistical Process Control (SPC) in an ISO certified facility.

Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, with an ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and other employees at all levels of the organization.

Willingness to operate production machinery as needed.

Ability to work overtime as required to meet production demands.

Must be able to read and write English and have a strong math (trigonometry and calculus) and science (physics/chemistry) background.

Knowledge of polymer science, high end engineering, medical resins, and associated process methodologies preferred.
