Role will interface with internal departments and suppliers to support the technical and commercial aspects of new and existing products by identifying and evaluating options for product, materials, and packaging solutions that meet marketing and technical requirements cost effectively.  These activities will involve understanding product requirements, identifying sources of supply, obtaining price quotations, analyzing the various options, coordinating evaluation/testing, presenting comprehensive proposals, executing item set up, and eventually transitioning to sustaining purchasing and manufacturing staff. Job Responsibilities-Sourcing Specialist:

Support the development of new products or packaging for brands from initial concept through product set up & launch within time and budgetary constraints

Projects include new product launches, new pack types, graphics refreshes, quality issue investigation & resolution with suppliers and customer specific packs.

Represent numerous functional objectives on projects from concept through commercialization in project meetings.

Maintain accurate package standards, specifications & best practices through proper documentation with a view towards ongoing tools and process improvements.

Support ongoing objectives to simplify production environment, improve product performance, maintain optimal inventory levels and lower costs.

Responsible for coordinating project activities across multiple functions and integrating back with project team, from initial timeline development to key functional updates, communicate risks, through ramp and release to production and transition to sustaining staff. 

Problem Solving: Perform solid root-cause analysis and problem solving to issues with current packaging and good technical design practices on new designs to ensure success the first time.
Work with Engineering, Supply Chain and Suppliers to understand the manufacturing & supply process to ensure consideration for design for manufacturability, including procuring samples for evaluation.

Cost Modeling: Works with Purchasing, Planning and Finance to develop comprehensive cost models for new packaging to understand total cost of ownership.

Coordinates packaging performance testing with external test labs or internal functions for shelf life, distribution and material specifications relating to key package dimensions & UN rated packaging testing and specification.

Qualification & Validation: Work with Suppliers, Operations, Quality & Engineering to plan and execute comprehensive qualification & validation (line trials) of new packaging and equipment systems.


Requirements and Experience-Sourcing Specialist: Packaging

Bachelors Degree in Business related field or Packaging Science. Would consider Mechanical, Industrial Engineer or similar technical field.

 3– 5 years of overall work experience with new product development teams to implement new consumer products, or functional packaging from concept through commercialization.

Ability to leverage resources of supplier and third party networks to accelerate go to market

Working knowledge of products key cost drivers, including with multiple materials and processes in various manufacturing environments.  Examples: rigid plastics, flexible materials, corrugate and paperboard

packaging, labels and other materials and processes including high-speed automated packaging equipment, with consideration to customer handling and distribution cycles

Ability to complete analysis and formulate recommendations based on understanding of material cost drivers with ability to build basic bill of material (BOM) cost structures at multiple volume tiers.

Experience with regulated packaging (DOT, EPA, FDA) or products a plus.

Experience with the following systems and software:

Intermediate ERP/MRP systems

Intermediate experience with Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint & Word

Beginner level a plus for TOPS or CAPE Pallet Software

Fundamental understanding of technical drawings or die lines.

Travel estimated at <10%.
