Sr. Human Resource Generalist

Our client, a $1B multi-plant industrial manufacturing company, has immediate direct hire need for a Sr. HR Generalist.  In this role, the person will support the HR function of a 40+ person unionized facility in south central lower Michigan.  Reporting to an HR Director at another facility, the Sr. HR Generalist will be the top HR person at this facility.  Additionally, this professional will be responsible for bringing the facility to current human resource standards, aligning the workforce to meet the strategic goals of the organization, while simultaneously clarifying the rationale to the employees of why change is needed and helpful.  They is unwavering support from leadership for making the needed organizational changes.  Initially, this role is non-supervisory and likely will evolve over time.  This is a unique developmental opportunity and a real chance to make a very significant different and see the impact of your work.

  Primary Responsibilities:

  • Performs all employee relations activities, including conflict resolution, investigations, grievances, contract negations, disciplinary procedures and terminations.
  • Prepare and distribute monthly/quarterly invoices to multiple entities for benefit related fees including; 401k recordkeeping, payroll administration, and HR services fees.
  • Review and update HR and employee related forms to ensure forms are current and compliant, and all company related entities are using current and consistent forms.
  • Develops and implement training and onboarding programs.
  • Administers FMLA, Personal Leaves of Absence and ADA-related requests for accommodation(s).
  • Provides oversight of workers’ compensation claims and responds to any on-site injuries or near-misses.
  • Develops key safety policies and programs—serving as a Safety Committee member—to support focus on employee safety.
  • In concert with the HR Leadership Team, develops and reinforces employment-related policies and procedures, including the Employee Handbook.
  • Aids in the implementation or automation of HR policies and practices.
  • Ensures compliance by initiating and overseeing internal HR audits, specifically in regard to employee records, HR practices and the department’s ongoing compliance with applicable Kronos and Work Instructions.
  • Coaches leaders through employee performance issues, disciplinary concerns and other difficult employment-related situations.
  • Assists in the oversight and administration of benefits and retirement programs. Leads and prepares benefits communications to all employees.
  • Investigates and partners with department leaders when notified of deviations as they relate to HR issues.
  • Prepares any and all reports as required by state or federal law (e.g. EEO-1 reports).
  • Designs and implements employee recognition and engagement initiatives.
  • Support diversity and inclusion initiatives and projects.
  • Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll and benefits, including health and dental, 401k, PTO, FMLA, and general employee personnel issues.
  • Assist Managers with recruitment and interview process, including phone screens, posting job ads, scheduling applicants, sending application information, and gathering feedback as necessary. 
  • Schedule and conduct new employee orientation activities including meeting arrangements, compilation of new hire paperwork, and overview of timekeeping and payroll systems.
  • Input new employee information into payroll and timekeeping systems to create employee record.
  • Verify I-9 documentation and maintain file.
  • Assist with creating personnel files using electronic file system.
  • Process payroll, HSA, FSA, and 401k contributions weekly and semi-monthly. 
  • Conduct benefits enrollment for eligible employees; assists with benefit administration including health, dental, voluntary life, vision, Section 125 flexible benefits, long-term disability and 401k retirement plan.
  • Manage annual performance review process.
  • Compile data from multiple entities in preparation for annual benefit audits.
  • Compile payroll data (i.e. hours worked from electronic timekeeping system) and input HR/payroll data and tracks the semi-monthly payroll and timecard cycle. 
  • Review wages computed and corrects errors to ensure accuracy of payroll. 

 

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field.

 

Experience:

  • 5-7 years in similar Sr. Generalist position with strong Union experience.
  • 5-7 years of experience in employee relations.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel; proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint. 
  • 2 to 3 years using web based electronic payroll systems.
